Library Read // Attack on Titan, Vol. 5 by Hajime Isayama

From the OverDrive description:

CAN YOU GO HOME AGAIN? ? Thanks to Eren, humanity has taken the town of Trost back from the Titans. Exhausted, Eren falls into a coma for three days - and wakes in shackles, staring at Erwin Smith, leader of the Survey Corps. Certain that Eren's father's research holds the key to the mystery of the Titans' rise, Smith wants an expedition to retrieve it from the house where Eren grew up. But that's deep in Titan territory, and to get there Eren will need to master a power he still doesn't fully understand...

Mm-mm! That's the sound of Jean putting Eren in his place. I love this song. That moment when the headstrong, stubborn as all get out protagonist gets knocked down so many pegs and brought to face reality. It's a flavor of story I've come to love. Jean telling Mikasa about herself. Levi being Levi. Top tier really.

Attack on Titan, Vol. 5 was a surprise. Story to episode, there's probably some overlap with the Vol. 4 and we continue on from around episode 14 to about episode 17. When you see a visual media adaptation of a text, having read the original source material, you're on the lookout for deviations. Sometimes, though mostly this is not the case, deviations work and spin a different but still, highly enjoyable yarn. See Neil Gaiman's Stardust and its movie adaptation. Selon moi, it's one of the few success stories in this sense. However, reading the source material after having seen the adaptation is completely different. Sometimes you get bored and things don't feel as fresh or as new as when you saw it for the first time. In this volume I found myself excited with anticipation. "Now we're getting started!" Or "how does this play out in this medium?" The anticipation made it all the more compelling. Is it weird to say I was laughing and smiling as I read this tale of ultimate despair? Anyhoo, I'm giving it 5 stars.
