Library Read // Attack on Titan, Vol. 4 by Hajime Isayama

From the OverDrive description:

HUMANITY PUSHES BACK! ? The Survey Corps develop a risky gambit - have Eren in Titan form attempt to repair Wall Rose, reclaiming human territory from the monsters for the first time in a century. But Titan-Eren's self-control is far from perfect, and when he goes on a rampage, not even Armin can stop him! With the survival of humanity on his massive shoulders, will Eren be able to return to his senses, or will he lose himself forever?

I've always had gripes with our protagonist, Eren. The way he's led blindly, mostly, by his desire for revenge. The way he insists that everyone around him be as fervent about marching towards certain death. His rigidity of thought and disgust towards anyone who does follow his line of thinking. The idea that to survive humanity must fight and should be willing to die, especially pre-knowledge of titan powers, is classic main character behavior. Because no one else has that plot armor. No one else is going to come back from death by sheer will, Eren style.

Jean has always embodied logical fear (and overcoming it, logically) he's always been a fave. Yes, we have the classic struggle between constant resistance, resistance even if it means death and obliteration, and strategic survival. I suppose that's what a lot of what Attack on Titan's about. Do you fight for your place in the world that hates you or do you do what it takes to survive. That's a question that demands individualized answers.

Attack on Titan, Vol. 4 is mostly a bunch of flashbacks contextualizing present day tensions. I've been trying to equate the amount of episodes I recall it taking to reach given points in the story. Apparently we're at about episode 14 or 15, so I think saying that we get a lot of stories for few volumes. But then we're also average about four chapters or "episodes" a volume, so I guess that's about right. I think I liked this volume more than the last two, if only for the detail of the world build. So 5 stars from me.
