Southwest hoarding. [12 Days of Christmas by Lara Hawthorne]
"On the first day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
a partridge in a pear tree."
Celebrate the magic of Christmas time with this well-loved traditional poem, The Twelve Days of Christmas, beautifully illustrated by Laura Hawthorne.
Take a walk through each beautiful scene brimming with details that will remind you of the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas. Perfect to read with your true love.
This is the second title in the series, The Christmas Choir, which beautifully illustrates beloved Christmas carols. Don't miss Silent Night, the first title in the series.
With lovely illustrations that carry thematically from page to page, Lara Hawthorne's 12 Days of Christmas is a seasonal counting delight. Instead of some snow-drenched setting, we're perhaps in the Southwest? The red and tan of the painted house and the ornate detailing, which in itself reminded me of IKEA (see this RÖDARV cushion from IKEA) and thus Scandinavia, gave me the feeling of the American Southwest. Though I'm sure a deep dive into the trees depicted would say otherwise.
Mission Revival meets Spanish Colonial, with a hit of the Old World Sweden. And then you're getting gift after gift after gift, increasing in number and size. Though the younger lady receiving the gifts doesn't appear to mind. Instead, her gifts bring her tiled courtyard to like. Suddenly the house is overrun, but in the most abundant and festive sense.
While very lovely, the illustrations didn't completely evoke Christmas. I'm likely too spoiled by expectations of snow to recognize Christmas through ornaments alone. I did, however, appreciate looking for gifts aforementioned in each frame. So for a child, I'd imagine this would make a fun read. 4 stars from me.
12 Days of Christmas is set for publication tomorrow, October 06, 2020.
